About Greener by Design

What is Greener by Design?

It was formed in 1999 by:

  • Airport Operators Association (AOA)
  • British Air Transport Association (BATA)
  • Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS)
  • Society of British Aerospace Companies (SBAC)

It brings together experts from every part of the aviation industry with Government bodies and research institutions to seek practical and environmentally and economically sustainable solutions to the challenge posed by aviation’s impact on the environment.

How is it funded?

It receives funds from the Department for Business, Enterprise & Regulatory Reform and is supported by numerous companies in the aviation sector.

How is Greener by Design managed?

It has an Executive Group to monitor the work of the coalition and an Advisory Group to provide a wide range of knowledge across the whole of the aerospace community.

What does Greener by Design do?

  • Researches, assesses and advises Government and industry on operational, technological, economic and regulatory options for limiting aviation’s environmental impact.
  • Promotes best practice across the aviation and aerospace sectors.
  • Promotes a balanced understanding of aviation’s true environmental impact and its environmental programmes.
  • Holds annual conferences on sustainable aviation.
  • Maintains a web site and library comprising a definitive archive of documents relating to sustainable aviation.

Sub-Groups

Greener by Design has sub-groups with experts from all sectors of aviation:

Operations

  • Getting passengers and freight to airports
  • Handling passengers and goods at airports
  • Airport services and ground operations
  • Operations in the air, including air traffic management.

Technology

  • Developing innovative technology and design concepts to reduce noise and emissions.

Market-Based Options

  • Determining how mechanisms such as emissions trading and industry/government agreements could be used to stimulate environmentally efficient operating strategies.

The Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) is the focal point for today's global aerospace community. The Department for Business, Enterprise & Regulatory Reform (BERR) brings together functions from the former Department of Trade and Industry, including responsibilities for productivity, business relations, energy, competition and consumers, with the Better Regulatory Executive (BRE), previously part of the Cabinet Office.

BERR leads work to create the conditions for business success through competitive and flexible markets that create value for businesses, consumers and employees. It drives regulatory reform, and works across Government and with the regions to raise levels of UK productivity.

BERR leads on making sustainable improvements in the economic performance of the regions. It is jointly responsible, with DfID and the FCO respectively, for trade policy, trade promotion and inward investment.

BERR is the champion for the aerospace and defence instustries within government.
